“Legendary Riesling-maker John Vickery releases two supurb-value wines each year and, while I like his Eden Valley Riesling, I absolutely adore his Watervale: a big wallop of almost gin-like juniper and citrus aroma, followed by a moreish mouthwateringly delicious limey flavour sloshing across the tongue.”

“EVR 153 ZMR. From 15-17yo low yielding vines from the Zander, Mason and Riley Vineyards, each parcel fermented separately in stainless steel before final selection and blending. Gleaming straw-green; classic young Eden Valley riesling, its citrus aromas and flavours on the midpoint between lime and lemon, the acidity flowing calmly on in the wake of the fruit, purity the watchword.”

“Mid-yellow colour, forward for its age. The bouquet is rich and up-front, ripe and generous, with echoes of lemon butter and baked lemon pudding. The wine is full, ample and concentrated; it's not a wine of delicacy or restraint, but accessible already and very giving. A very good, fuller-blown style which drinks well early. It could also surprise by cellaring well .”

“This beautiful riesling is a collaboration between riesling master John Vickery (first vintage 1951) and Barossa-based Phil Lehmann, winemaker for the WD Wine group, owners of Hesketh Wines, St John's Road and Parker Coonawarra Estate. Vickery's involvement extended from fruit selection to "the final classification, where only the very best components were selected by Phil and John for the finalised wine", writes their partner Jonathon Hesketh. Vickery 2015 is full-bodied style at 13 per cent alcohol. But at the same time it's refined and delicate, with the juicy, irresistible, lime-like varietal flavours unique to this Clare Valley subregion. What a great bargain it is.”

Light, bright straw-green; manages to fill the senses with its Catherine wheel of citrus fruits, already with great balance and varietal expression. A prime each way bet, now or later”

“Its code name is WVR 172 CK.

'Grant: Excuse me. Could I borrow a match?
Bond: I use a lighter
Grant: Better still
Bond: Until they go wrong'

Fresh, aromatic and spicy with honey and sweet limes. It’s easy going, almost soft and juicy with a gentle honeyed gloss, slight slaty ‘mineral’ characters, and the distinct flavour of a gin and tonic with a good twist of fresh lime. As Smooth as George Lazenby, and equally sophisticated. A delight to drink. Chin chin!”

“John Vickery began his career in 1955 at Leo Buring. He made some of the Wyndham in 1994 to spearhead Richmond Grove’s impressive riesling program. A blend of fruit from vineyards ranging from 14 to 83 years old, this beautifully pure and pristine wine has gentle floral and citrus notes that lead on to an incredible fine and superbly balanced palate. Good now, you will pat yourself on the back if you put a dozen away to drink in five to 15 years’ time.”

“The Watervale Riesling is the more approachable of the two, and is a tad less fine and delicate. That said, it’s another great Riesling that also shows that creamy texture that is the hallmark of great South Australian Riesling. ”

2016 Watervale Riesling: 94 points

“A year after the death of Leo Buring in 1961, Lindemans bought his business and retained his winemaker, John Vickery. Lindemans promptly planted riesling in place of sherry varieties on Buring's Florita Vineyard at Watervale, southern Clare Valley. And, in time for the 1963 vintage, they installed protective winemaking equipment in the winery. This set the stage for Vickery to emerge over the coming decades as Australia's master riesling maker. Vickery retired some years ago. But in 2014 he collaborated with winemaker Phil Lehmann on this lovely Watervale riesling. It's made in the flavoursome but delicate Vickery style: intense lime-like varietal aromas and flavours of great purity, with a clean, dazzling acid backbone and a bit of bite in the dry finish. "Vickery" is part of WD Wines, owners also of Hesketh Wines, St John's Road and Parker Coonawarra Estate.”

“This is a beautifully delicate, restrained, low alcohol (11.5 per cent) riesling with a lifted fragrance of lime and dried herbs. Great delicacy in the mouth with soft, seamless acidity, subtle chalky texture and mouth watering properties. Finesse plus.”

“The better half went to use some of this in her chicken and mushroom risotto and I asked her to hold off please. This is a smashingly good Riesling may I say. Too good to use on cooking even though I am an advocate for using good wine to cook with - just not this one please. There is drinkability plus here folks as you may have already worked out. Lashings of ripe lime and green apples. Watervale showing off its capacity to deliver time honoured top knotch Riesling. John Vickery and Philip Lehman together is very fine synergy. Soft zesty acidity add structure and character to this white, for me it can do no wrong. Drink to 2019 plus. About $24. Try it with grilled barramundi and chats.”

The 2015 Riesling Eden Valley has lovely grapefruit, lime leaves and lemon peel aromas on the nose with a waft of chalk dust. It has some silkiness to the texture, is fresh, dry, and with nice weight and length. This wine was made by Phillip Lehmann and no 2014 was made because the fruit was declassified.

“This is the first release of a cracking Clare Valley riesling that's a collaborative effort between veteran John Vickery, maker of many of the great old Leo Buring rieslings, and talented young gun Phil Lehmann, youngest son of the late Peter Lehmann. Made from fruit from three Watervale vineyards, two young, one old, this is a wine of rare beauty and purity - and the product of a great Clare vintage. A vivacious, floral nose leads on to a palate driven by fresh lime and grapefruit-tinged acidity, tremendous length and flinty minerality. Vibrant, refreshing, delicious. You won't do better at the price. $24”

“Rich flavour, touch of sweetness, gentle chalkiness with fine minerally acidity and excellent length”

“This wine is the result of a collaboration between legendary winemaker John Vickery and Phil Lehmann. It’s a pure, delicate, floral style with great linearity and a steely acid backbone. It certainly needs a few years to build richness, and it has all the attributes required. ”

“Light, bright straw hue, and a lifted fragrance of lime and dried herbs. The wine is slightly drier then the St John’s Road, but also slightly softer in acidity, at the same time as the alcohol is lower an the wine has great delicacy in the mouth. Subtly chalky texture and mouth-watering properties. Great finesse, perfume and length. A most impressive young riesling.”

“Carrying a name that dedicated riesling fans will recognise as the celebrated Australian winemaker John Vickery, who has counseled Phil Lehmann in the crafting of two iterations, from the Clare and Eden valleys. This one is pure, dry, with classic white flowers, lemon juice sharpness and tang in the mouth, then purity and lime in the finish. Its Clare sibling is a little fuller in style though still magically salivating.”

You have to admire the pitch of this. It suggests at power without ever bragging about it. It sizzles with a slatey dryness though the finish, but in the lead-up there’s plenty of citrussy/blossomy flavour to tuck into. Perhaps even a crunch of apple too. It’s quite terrific.”

“There is no grape variety that offers better value for money in Australia than riesling; which particularly shines in the Clare and Eden valleys of South Australia. Phil Lehmann, talented son of the late Peter Lehmann, makes excellent examples in both regions under the Vickery label, which pays tribute to arguably Australia's greatest-ever riesling maker, John Vickery, who is a consultant in the making of these wines, The 2016 releases are both excellent, but for me the Eden Valley wine just edged out the Watervale example, although it was a photo finish. It is slightly rounder, maybe a little more adult, while retaining the essential citrus and acid elements. Just lovely. ”

“The wine has just been released, and hasn’t hit the shops yet. When it does, it will sell for less than $20. Regardless, this is a great Riesling, and I’ve been waiting for this trifecta: John Vickery, Phil Lehmann and a great Riesling vintage in SA. It’s a winner after the mixed blessings of 2014 and the heat of 2015, displaying the usual ripe limes and talc overtones but adding an almost creamy texture and a superfine acid backbone. All it needs is time – I reckon it will improve for 10 years or more. A classic from a great team. ”

2016 Vickery Eden Valley: 95 Points

quotes

“John Vickery is to Australian wine what Don Bradman is to cricket: a bloody legend who set the standards by which all others are judged — except John’s still alive and still making wine, in conjunction with Phil Lehmann, son of another deadset legend, Peter Lehmann.

Vickery’s forte is riesling: his Leo Buring wines of the 1960s and 70s defined the classic, pure, dry, long-lived Australian style. So when the young Lehmann coaxed Vickery out of retirement a couple of years ago to finally have a crack at producing some wine with his own name emblazoned on the label, what other variety could they have chosen but riesling? Echoing John’s great Leo Buring Leonay and Richmond Grove wines of old, only two Vickery wines are produced: a Watervale riesling from the Clare Valley and an Eden Valley riesling from the hills above the Barossa.

The 2016 vintages of both have just been released and they’re gorgeous: the Watervale is pure lime-juicy refreshment, seriously more-ish, with lovely floral citrus blossom aromas leading on to a mouthful of crunchy white grapes; the Eden Valley is also beautifully pure, precise and focused, with a little less of the juicy grapes and more of the citrus cut.

The good news is that these wines retail for $23 a bottle — closer to $20 or less if you shop around and buy by the case. And I suggest you think about doing just that: they are mouth-wateringly delicious now but you can be confident they will also age slowly and deliciously across the next 10, 15 even 20 years.”
